This Himalayan kingdom, closed to the outside world until the mid-70s and shrouded in mystery for some many centuries prior, finds itself tightly wedged between the superpowers of China (Tibet) and India. And while the country’s marketing machine may have succeeded to publicizing, ‘Gross National Happiness’ as its guiding light, it’s how this principle manifests itself in its people that is the country’s most beautiful trait.
Covering up to 800 miles during our adventure, our expedition starts in the capital and largest city in Bhutan, Thimpu. Home of the Bhutanese Royal Family, its beautiful facades and colourful streets work as a perfect introduction to this Himalayan nation. From there we lean through endless curves to the glacial valley town of Gangtey, the historic district of Bumthang, the rustic, far-flung village of Tingtibi, the Indian border town of Gelephu and the home of one of the world’s most majestic forts, the romantic riverside town of Punakha. Finally, we make our way to Paro where over 2 days we ride the highest pass in the country and trek to the magnificent Tiger’s Nest Monastery.
There is simply no place on Earth like Bhutan. The mountain vistas are endless, its natural beauty is untouched, the people are the kindest found anywhere, and its architecture, pervasive throughout the country, is in complete harmony with the landscape.
For the motorcycle adventurist, the Last Himalayan Kingdom is heaven.
